Here at Back to Eden Wellness, we have reduced our single-use plastic to none. We have also reduced our products to use none or very little plastic. Take a look around at our products and you will understand what we mean.

The Plastic Problem
Each year, over 300 million tons of plastic are produced globally, with over 8 million tons ending up in our oceans. This is a staggering amount, and the consequences are dire. Marine life, from tiny fish to majestic whales, ingest plastic fragments, mistaking them for food. These materials can take hundreds of years to decompose. With an issue of this magnitude, it’s crucial for all of us to be aware and take action. By understanding our choices, we can help protect our planet while improving our health.
Microplastics and Their Impact
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, under 5mm, that stem from larger plastics or are intentionally made for products. The smallest microplastics have been found in human bodies, in our lungs and even womens placentas. (Nih.gov) These particles are foreign to our body. They also are known to leach over time.
Chemical Leaching from Plastics
Plastics can leach harmful chemicals into the environment and our body, particularly when exposed to sunlight and seawater. These include:
Bisphenol A (BPA): Disrupts endocrine function.
Phthalates: Affect reproductive and developmental health.
Heavy Metals: Absorbed from the environment and released into organisms.
Consequences of Microplastics and Chemical Leaching
Ingesting microplastics and leached chemicals can severely impact humans and animals, causing:
Digestive system disruption.
Toxin bioaccumulation in the food chain.
Long-term ecological damage.
The Importance of Going Plastic-Free
Living a plastic-free life means more than just cutting down on waste; it also encourages the use of healthier, non-toxic alternatives. Many plastic items, especially in food packaging, can leach harmful chemicals into what we consume. For instance, studies show that chemicals like BPA found in many plastics can disrupt our hormones. By reducing plastic usage, we can lower our exposure to these harmful substances and create a healthier living environment.
Practical Steps Towards a Plastic-Free Life
Making the switch to a plastic-free lifestyle may seem overwhelming, but it can be done gradually. Here are some easy steps to guide you along the way:
Choose Reusable Products: Opt for durable reusable bags, glass containers, and stainless steel bottles. Not only do these items cut down on plastic waste, but they can also save you money in the long term. For example, using a stainless steel water bottle can save you $200 a year if you usually buy bottled water.
Support Non-Toxic Brands: When shopping for personal care items, look for brands that prioritize eco-friendly and non-toxic ingredients. Switching to safer products not only protects your health but also supports companies dedicated to sustainability.
Embrace Bulk Buying: Purchase food and other household supplies in bulk to reduce packaging. Bring your own containers when possible. Many stores encourage bulk buying with little or no plastic packaging—this can help cut waste by up to 50%.
Compost and Recycle Responsibly: Effective waste management is critical for a cleaner Earth. Composting food scraps can reduce waste volume by 30%. Ensure you're aware of local recycling rules to maximize your impact.
Adopting a plastic-free mindset aligns us with a global movement striving for sustainability and better health. Using eco-friendly products not only cleans up our environment but also encourages healthier living habits. As we gain knowledge about our choices, we empower ourselves to make beneficial changes for our well-being and our planet.
Embrace the Challenge
Transitioning to a plastic-free lifestyle takes dedication, knowledge, and a supportive community. Understanding the harsh realities of plastic pollution and championing non-toxic alternatives enables us to contribute to a cleaner, healthier world.
Each small effort adds up to create significant changes that enhance our environments and improve our health. Let’s work together and inspire others to take part in this important cause.
